Early Entrance Protocol

The Greenfield-Central Community School Corporation supports Indiana state law and the established cut-off date of age 5 by August 1 for kindergarten entrance (I.C.20-33-2-7). School entrance at this age is set to ensure that most children will be developmentally ready for both kindergarten and future educational experiences.

The Greenfield-Central Board of School Trustees and school administrators recognize that there may be a need for exceptions in rare circumstances for students whose birthday is in close proximity to the cut-off date of August 1. Therefore, Greenfield-Central has established a procedure for parents who wish to request such an exception. An application may be submitted for children who will be age 5 after August 1 and prior to September 2.

Parents and school personnel should view such early entrance as a form of grade acceleration. Careful consideration must be given to the child’s needs, cognitive and social-emotional development, and the effect such early entrance may have on school success during all phases of maturation. Decisions regarding early entry shall be made after evaluation by a professional team which includes building principals, the Early Childhood Coordinator, and the Director of Elementary Education.

Parents must submit the required application for early entrance to kindergarten for the following school year by May 1. Application information will be available on the Greenfield-Central Community School Corporation website. Families who enter the school district after May 1 and before the start of school may submit applications for review.
